Potential Of wind power generation in India

Potential Of wind power generation in India

The potential wind power in India inexhaustible. It has been estimated that at current level Technology. Wind energy generation potential in India is staggering 45000MW at the end of 2012. India is a country with the fifth largest install wind power industry compared with Denmark of the US a combination of domestic policy support for wind power and the strong manufacturing base have fired the growth of  wind energy Power generation.
Wind power accounts for 6% of India's total installed Power capacity, and it generates 1.6% of the country's power.

Following table show installed capacity of wind power states of India.

States                      Installed capacity

Tamilnadu.              6970 MW
Gujarat.                    2884 MW
Maharashtra.          2310 MW
Karnataka.              1730 MW
Rajasthan.               2072 MW
M.P.                           275.6 MW
Kerala.                      32 MW
Orissa                       2.0 MW
West Bengal.           2.1 MW

Government of India has launched
various scheme attract the power generation through wind power. Capital cost of installation of wind energy Power Plants have been reduced due to innovation in technology , modern manufacturing system and easy availability of finance.

Wind maps in India

Government of India is running more than 500 meteorological laboratories all over India. They observe and collect important weather data which includes wind velocity and wind direction.

Animographic station in the laboratories record the data related two wind speed and wind direction and maps them on time basis.

Mapping of wind velocity data:

Characteristics maps are drawn on the basis of information of wind velocity and direction recorded by the meteorological laboratories and animographic stations following observation are required for for mapping the wind maps.

1) Hourly mean and peak velocity of wind in kms per hour.

2) Daily mean peak velocity of wind in kms per hour.

3) Monthly mean and peak velocity of wind in kms per hour

4) yearly mean and peak velocity of wind in kms per hour.
