Types of wind turbines :

Wind turbines are the prime movers which run on kinetic of wind.

There are Two types of wind turbines :

1) Vertical Axis wind turbines : (VAWT)

The axis of wind turbine of this type is vertical. Tie ropes and supports are used to keep main shafts of turbine Vertical. It's generator is kept in ground level vertical Axis wind turbine can be rotated by the winds coming from any direction.

(A) Savonius wind turbines :

In 1920 S.J Savonius had designed the Savonius wind mill. The rotor of this vertical Axis wind mill is S-shape. It is made from hemispherical drums welded to the vertical shaft fitted in the bearing which are fixed on the ground.
Mechanical energy available on the shaft can be used for running Water pump, flour mill and farm machineries.

There may be more than two wings of Savonius rotor. But other end of the wind mill is free which is supported by the guy wires grouted on the ground.
Due to these supports the wind mill can withstand High speed Winds.

(B) Darrieus wind turbines :

In 1925 Georges Darrieus had designed the vertical Axis wind mill with light weight aerofoil blades to give less resistance to air and more rotational speed even in low speed Winds.

The rotor is made up of two, three or more numbers of thin metallic strips with their ends fitted on the shaft. It has shape of egg beater and hence its rotor is Called egg beater.

The wind strike in the strips or give rotational torque to the vertical shaft on the wind mill. The generator pump kept on The ground is also rotated to give Power.

2) Horizontal Axis Wind turbines : ( HAWT )

The Axis of main shafts of this type of turbine in horizontal. It is fitted on the height of Tower.
Nacelle is a unit comprised of wind turbine shaft, generator, gear box and other control system.

Aerogenerant are the machines which convert wind energy in to electricity.
They are smaller are size wind turbines power plants with capacity around 30MW.
It can operate on wind turbine and generator system or along SPV system to from solar hydride system for decentralized Power generation in remote unelectrified areas with adequate wind speeds.
