Ozone layer :-
The scientist were extremely worried in 1985 when a hole in the ozone layer was discovered of Antarctica.Rhe size of this hole was as larger as the areas of the US continent! The UV reduction of the solar radiation are absorbed by the ozone layer.
If the layer is depleted or if holes get developed in ozone layer,the UV reduction ( wave length 290 to 320 nm) will reach the Earth.
UV exposure can lead to skin cancer. Cataracts and suppression of immune system response in human being. As the ozone layer protects against the ill effect of UV radiations it is also known as ozone umbrella.
Ozone is continuously created in the stratosphere by the absorption if UV radiations.
It is also removed by chemical reactions which convert ozone (O3) to molecular oxygen (O2).
CFCL3 + Radiations ---------> CL + CFCL2
CL + O3 -----> CLO + O2
CH4 + CL------> HCL + CH3
Molecules of CFCs can be broken by UV radiations to release CL which is available to destroy ozone.
Methen gas helps in removing chlorine which destroy ozone.
Lodized to CH3O2 ( Peroxy radical ) which ultimately stabilize as CO2 after further oxidation.
Effect of Ozone layer depletion :
Ill effect of depletion is ozone layer are as under :
1. Increase the global temperature
2. Ice melting
3. Exapantion of sea water volume
4. Flooding of low laying Areas of coastal regions
5. Cause greatest damage to DNA.
6. Skin cancer is attributed to UV exposure.
