Types of Horizontal Axis wind turbines (HAWT)

Types of Horizontal Axis wind turbines (HAWT)

There are various designs of Horizontal Axis wind turbines, some of the important classification of Horizontal Axis wind turbines are as under:

Classification according to Number of blades in rotors :

Wind turbines are classified according to Number of blades in rotors. Monoblade wind turbine has only one blade in the rotor. Opposite balancing weight are kept in monoblade rotor.
Twin blade turbines have two blade in rotors while tripple bled turbine have three blades. The solidarity ratio or rotor increase in number of blades and power generating capacity decreases.
Hence more number of blades are not desirable. Normally three blades are used in the rotor of turbine.

Types of Horizontal Axis wind turbines

Classification according to the power output  :

Horizontal Axis wind turbine are classified according to their power generation capacity. There are three types of a HWAT plants.

1) Small capacity HWAT Plants :

These types of turbines have 10- 50 kw power output capacity.
The diameter of rotor may be 1-16 meters.

2) medium capacity HWAT Plants :

These types of turbines have 50-500 kw power output capacity. The rotor diameter various from 16m to 50m.

3) Large Capacity HAWT plants :

These types of plants have capacity from  500-1000 kw. It's rotor diameter varies from 50m - 130m.
